WSJ: Apple is Also Working On A Standalone Navigation Application Beside Maps

The outburst of rumors about a Maps application from Apple in iOS 6 are known to everyone. But beside building Maps application for iOS to get rid of Google services, Apple is also developing a standalone Navigation application for iOS. This navigation application is basically targeted for an in-car GPS solution, a person involved in the project told WSJ.

As per the sources, Apple has also began licensing road-traffic condition and local business from around the world. This step is to get the critical data to make their own “geocoder” which would convert the longitudes and latitudes into the actual addresses. Moreover, the geocoder in upcoming software update from Apple has already replaced the dependency on Google. It means if you need any geolocation, it would be directly from Apple, not Google.

And this Geocoder would be used by the iOS developers in their applications in the form of “GLGeocoder” which would let them find their friends or people they know in the neighborhood or nearby eateries. However, it’s not known if Apple would release it along with their Maps application in iOS 6 or we would be able to see it in the upcoming firmware versions.

To find out, we may need to wait for more few days. WWDC is all set to happen on 11th June where Apple would unveil new line up of Macbook Pros & Air in addition to glimpse of iOS 6 and specific date for the release of Mountain Lion. Are you excited for it?
